1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
2 1/2 all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder

These are my go-to cutout sugar cookies. They’re buttery, tender, and hold their shape perfectly when baked. They have a crisp edge and a soft, melt-in-your-mouth center, they’re the ideal canvas for festive decorations or a simple frosting. Every bite is sweet, nostalgic perfection!

Prepare all ingredients

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy and increased in volume.

Mix in the eggs, vanilla, and almond extract.

Sift together the dry ingredients, add to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined (add food coloring if desired).

Wrap the dough and chill for at least 1 hour or overnight.

Preheat oven to 375F. Roll to 1/4-1/2" thickness and cut out with desired shapes. Flour the cookie cutters so they don't stick to the dough and you don't have to wiggle the cutter and misshape the cookie. Transfer to baking sheets.

Bake the cookies for 8-12 minutes depending on the size of the cookies. The cookies won't be brown but the tops should not be shiny.

Allow the cookies to cool, then decorate as desired.
For detailed designs use royal icing (I find that when I drip the icing off of a spoon and it takes 15 seconds to sink back into the rest of the icing, it's the perfect consistency for both outlining and filling).
If you're just frosting for flavor, raspberry cream cheese frosting is delicious! Enjoy!
