I originally created this recipe because as a 13-year-old, making a fast cake in the microwave was very appealing. However, the recipes I tried never turned out like a cake should. Some were dense rubber, and others were too bitter to eat from the baking soda. I set out to design my own to meet the standard of what a cake should be in terms of taste and texture.

I started this recipe blog in 7th grade, and this was one of my first recipes. I was very proud because I designed it myself. I knew I wanted to update it because it could use some improvements, but as I began to edit this recipe, I realized I wanted to keep the memory of the original post as something to look back on as I get older. That being said, the ingredient list has changed, but there are two sets of pictures and instructions for the purpose of nostalgia :). The first set is the revised recipe, so follow that one. Enjoy!

Hello again!

I made a mug cake because I’ve always seen mug cakes, but whenever I try them, they never come out like a real cake. I wanted to make a mug cake that actually worked, and met my standards for what I believe a mug cake should turn out like. I would also like to give a special thanks to my Uncle who made me an awesome apron with my logo on it! He also helped me with this recipe, I hope you enjoy!

Steps

1
Done

Prepare the ingredients. 9/16/24

As always, Get your ingredients ready (and don't forget an apron, unfortunately, I couldn't post a picture of mine, but I will try to get one up soon). 9/23/18

2
Done

Melt the Tbsp of butter in a 12 oz mug, swirl the mug to coat the sides with butter. The butter fulfils two roles here, one as a part of the cake, and one to grease the mug. 9/16/24

Stir all your dry ingredients until well combined. 9/23/18

3
Done

Add remaining ingredients (including cocoa powder for a chocolate cake) and stir until well combined. You can also add any add-ins that you would like, such as sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc. 9/16/24

Next, add your butter and mix until it is well incorporated. 9/23/18

4
Done

Microwave at 70% power for 3 minutes, let stand for 30 seconds. If the cake is not fully cooked, pop it back in the microwave for another 30 seconds at 100% power. The cake should still be moist, but not batter. 9/16/24

Now add your milk, adding it a little at a time will help everything to mix evenly. 9/23/18

5
Done

Add any toppings you would like, such as ice cream, whipped cream, or fruit. 9/16/24

Finally, add in your vanilla and microwave for 2 minutes and 30 seconds (times may vary depending on microwave) Be careful when taking this out of the microwave because the mug may be hot. You can also add cocoa powder if you want a chocolate cake, but I forgot to take a picture of that one. 9/23/18

Dig in and enjoy! 9/16/24

My Uncle helped me with this recipe and he said it would be even better with a scoop of ice cream, and though I'm not sure I agree, here you go. 9/23/18
